about

Music and rhythm for a forest walk or a desert ritual. Dancing the fire of life from earth to water to wind, from sounds found in nature (tracks 1, 2) to instruments made by hand (tracks 1, 2, 3) to sounds salvaged from abandoned industrial artifacts (tracks 3, 4, 5).

DRUM OAKS
Natural basalt and schist chime stones, Santa Rita Mountains, southern Arizona.
Rattle made from bones found in central Kentucky: box turtle shell, honey locust beans, whitetail deer hooves, coyote foot bones.
Fretless banjo. Hand drumming on hollow trees:
Arizona white oak (Quercus arizonica) above a creek in the Santa Rita Mountains.
Live oak (Quercus virginiana) in old growth deciduous forest, Outer Banks, North Carolina, with small waves on the Albemarle Sound lapping at the tree’s roots.

NIGHTFALL IN MADERA CANYON
Fretless banjo. Night birds of the southern Arizona Madrean oak forest: Mexican whip-poor-will, elf owl, whiskered screech owl (Madera Canyon, May 28, 2015).

IRON GATE
Instruments made from scrap steel: overtone flutes (electrical conduit), four hole Mojave-style rim blown flute (black pipe), forged iron bells, sheet metal rattles.
Field recordings: Water tank drum. Rusty steel pipe gate.

DARK MOON DRUMS
Hand drumming on abandoned cylindrical steel water tanks in the southern Arizona desert. Recorder was placed inside the tanks. Horizontal tank is 7 feet in diameter by 30 feet long. Vertical tank is about 20 feet high and 35 feet in diameter.

LOST WATER, IRON WIND
Water tank drum. Field recording of abandoned desert windmill.
