about

This sideblown flute has a single hole, plays four notes, and was created entirely by a carpenter bee. It is a dried woody flowerstalk of beargrass (Nolina microcarpa), a yucca relative with grasslike leaves that have long white tassels.
The big black solitary Xylocopa bumble bees lay eggs on flowerstalks of yucca, agave, and related plants. The bee develops inside the stalk, living on the wood and excavating large tunnels. The mature bee chews its way out, leaving a ragged circular hole.
The flute is 11.5 inches long and has a smooth 3/4 inch bore. All I did was cut the ends off and sand them smooth, using the entire length that the bee had excavated, and its exit hole.
